Treats
(207)882-6192
80 Main Street, Wiscasset
www.treatsofmaine.com
Open Monday through Saturday 10-6, Sunday 12-3.
This gorgeous food store makes Wiscasset a lucky place, but knowledgeable travelers can visit it easily. The interior, with its old butcher-block table, stone counters, and array of appealing food will rouse an appetite as you contemplate what to buy.
Customers sit at a long table in the rear of the store to drink the strong coffee and eat blueberry muffins in the morning, or enjoy the sandwiches for lunch. The store makes different sandwiches every day, rearranging its turkey, roast beef, salami, and ham with various cheeses on bread from Black Crow and Borealis, delivered fresh in the morning.
Teas, jams, maple syrup, chocolate, and a fetching tower of homemade cookies beckon along the way through the store. In a neighboring area another glass display case is stocked with cheese, including Hudson Valley Camembert. Along the walls filled with wine from $6 to $200, you can find a $44 Nickel & Nickel Russian River Valley Syrah. Value-priced reds are displayed in a basket, ready for dinner. Wine tastings are held every month.
I can't imagine not stopping here on the way through town, to get the last details of a picnic or a fabulous house present; it's on the right when you drive north, two blocks before the bridge out of town.
