Casual with a bar menu, but ready to fete a special occasion with more ambitious dishes, The Frog and Turtle is a fun destination for great meals.
A winter night is well spent in this welcoming restaurant -- or call it a gastropub, as owner James Tranchemontagne does, so that gourmand customers know they can go downscale or up, eating well either way.
Bacon in a leek and potato soup proved a reason to walk in from the cold. Pork loin wrapped in bacon was the lure that caught the fancy of one friend, and its tender and flavorful meat filled him with contentment. Grilled scallops with bacon and horseradish sauce exceeded the expectations of another. Savory crepes -- we loved the one with an assortment of good mushrooms, and grated Sardo -- are another draw, as are the excellent hamburgers, for smaller meals. Every dish I tried here one February night was cooked perfectly.
Beware the pleasures of this table, especially if you wish to survive for the last course. The ice cream is fabulous and, stuffed in profiteroles, sublime.
