This market is known for its wine. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo sells for around $8; Côte du Ventoux, a grenache syrah blend ($8.18), is a wine Anne Tessier Talbot, manager and owner, called a beautiful bottle, Rhone-style with medium body and well-balanced fruit, moderately dry. Wine tastings are offered once a month.
A blend of provolone and mozzarella tops all the pizzas, made with fresh pizza dough from Sorella's in Portland. When this place started 52 years ago, with hot dogs, the next step was sub sandwiches; by the 1960s Tess's made its own pizza, but they recently outsourced the dough to Sorella's. Hot buttered crust-bare baked pizza dough-is offered with sugar and cinnamon, or garlic and oil. Homemade meatballs are used in the meatball subs, and a large variety of sandwiches is available. "I'm packing 35 sandwiches as we talk for the football team," said Tessier Talbot, one September afternoon.
