Popular for its great food, this is the place everyone is talking about.

Stonewall Kitchen was already famous for wonderful jams and other condiments, made since 1991, as well as an ever-growing list of mixes, desserts, and other foods. It was already a popular tourist stop, because so much of what it sold was offered as free samples in the stores, here in York, in Portland, and in Camden, to name just those few. The café opened in 2004 at its present headquarters in York and serves many dishes made with the mixes and jams, vinegars, mustards, and other delicious things you can now buy, after a meal, next door.

A lobster salad BLT, on toasted brioche with basil aioli and served with coleslaw, was on the fall café menu ($14). The Stonewall burger ($10) pairs grilled Angus beef with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and roasted garlic onion jam on a toasted roll, with a choice of a small salad or french fries.

Brunch here is spectacular, especially if you start with a split of Domaine Chandon ($9.50) and try the Linzer waffles with raspberry and hazelnut butter sauce ($12). The good, short wine list is a real plus.

Rum raisin bread pudding, or bananas Foster with vanilla ice cream, sounds right for just about anytime.
