Picnic-style dining indoors or out, in a spot that looks out on the Pemaquid River

Fifty to a hundred lobsters are picked each day at this ultimate Maine spot, where the lobster rolls hold a lot of lobster meat, a generous 6 full ounces filling a soft Zellie from a Portland bakery, and they were selling for $14.95 in 2009.

But put such a feast together with one of the most peaceful, expansive views of the water, and you have a paradise indeed.

Picnic benches with plastic tablecloths flap in the breeze, both inside the simple building and outside; and every one affords a wide view of an endless green lawn and the four-square roof of a classic Maine house sitting just up from the endless blue water.

An occasional special, the crabmeat roll ($12.95) competes with the regular menu of fried haddock, clams, shrimp, or scallops. A shore dinner with a 1¼-pound lobster, steamed clams, corn on the cob, coleslaw, and a roll was $25.95 for a hardshell in 2008.

The lobster, of course, tastes great here, at the oldest continuously operated fisherman's cooperative in the United States. Bring a bottle of wine and a salad, as some many locals and summer residents do, and settle in for a beautiful evening.
